Education Tax Benefits: A goal succeded by Andrew Bossie '07

Opportunity Maine provides a Maine income tax credit for student loan payments made by degree earners who live, work and pay taxes in Maine following graduation. The tax credit is also available to Maine businesses that make their employees’ educational loan payments.  This is all made possible by Andrew Bossie, 2007 USM graduate.  While attending USM and serving as student-body president, Andrew's had a goal to offer debt relief for college students upon graduation.  After countless hours of collecting signatures, January 2008, Andrew's goal, Opportunity Maine, went into effect.

To claim the Educational Opportunity Tax Credit, qualifying individuals must file a Maine Income Tax Return. Using the Credit for Educational Opportunity Worksheet below when completing the income tax return will provide the necessary information to determine eligibility and claim the credit, if eligible.
